Used Rodeo is tough and stylish, but shoppers should exercise extreme caution
Common owner complaints included limited room for bigger occupants, some inconveniently-placed controls and potentially-uncomfortable seats. Wind and road noise seem to be louder than average, and other issues relate to some less-than-durable cabin materials and the potential for premature tire wear.

If the Rodeo’s style and ruggedness have you interested, you’ll want to ensure any used model you look at receives a comprehensive inspection with the help of a mechanic. Though all SUV’s in this era have their problems, the Rodeo appears to be less reliable than numerous competing models. Since Isuzu’s flown the coop, parts availability can be an issue, too.

Though no enormous or high-volume problems popped up relating to the powerplant or transfer case, the automatic transmission may be a cause for worry. Be sure to check for slippage and hard shifting, especially when the transmission is cold.

The problem seems to be a combination of a computer-related glitch and fluid draining from the torque-converter after being parked. Blown transmission seals and premature failure of solenoids aren’t entirely uncommon either. First and foremost, be sure the transmission is in tip-top shape. If it doesn’t check out, walk away and save yourself the potentially expensive repair bill. Remember to ask a mechanic if you’re unsure what to look for.

As with any vehicle, you’ll want to get down low and have a poke around the Rodeo’s underside. Note any holes, dents or heavy scrapes, and be especially mindful of excessive rust. This is also a great time to check for leaks from the gearbox, transfer case and differentials, too. If any are noted, be sure they’re explained and addressed before agreeing to purchase the vehicle.

Check for a smooth and steady idle that’s free of surging. If the Rodeo’s idle is sporadic, it may have electronic problem or a faulty intake manifold gasket. Ensure the transfer case shifts properly in and out of its four wheel drive mode, and note the condition of the tires and brakes.

While driving, kill the radio and listen for abnormal clunking or grinding from the suspension. Be sure the steering wheel turns smoothly from lock to lock when parked as well. A full check of the suspension and steering systems by a mechanic is advised, as it may reveal any number of potentially-expensive repairs the Rodeo’s previous owner may be trying to pass onto you.

Note that a check engine light can indicate a wide variety of problems too—so you’ll want to have it diagnosed if it’s illuminated.

The Rodeo is both simple and difficult to sum up as a used buy. As a rugged, unique and nicely styled sport ute, a well-maintained model with full service records and a mechanical thumbs-up should satisfy. But, if you’re looking for a more on-road, all-purpose sort of hauler and don’t mind blending in a little, looking elsewhere isn’t a bad idea—for safety’s sake.
