2003 Infiniti G35 Sport Coupe - Grace Under Pressure

Who would have thought? Infiniti, the company that struggled for respect throughout the 1990s, is now selling more cars in Canada than archrival Lexus. Its stellar G35 sedan has had a lot to do with that success, a car lauded by automotive journalists around the globe for its BMW beating performance, stimulating design and full load of creature comforts.

It only makes sense to follow up the show with an equally impressive encore, right? Enter the G35 Coupe, acclaimed as one of the most beautifully styled vehicles currently available. I have to agree. It's easy to see the family resemblance but amazingly there isn't a single piece of exterior sheetmetal that shares origin with the sedan that literally paved its way into existence.

The virtues that make Infiniti's 4-door sibling so endearing, however, are now enhanced in the new coupe, improving both full-on acceleration and at-the-limit handling. But at first glance the area surrounding Phoenix, Arizona, where Infiniti made test cars available for scribes such as myself to try out, is hardly mountainous, with a grid-like road and highway system that sprawls as far as the eye can see when approaching via flight. This would make it difficult to appreciate the latter of its two improvements.
