2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class - Still Setting the Class Standard

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always been one of the standards by which luxury sedans are judged, as well as the cornerstone of the M-B sedan range, and the new 2003 model will certainly maintain that profile.

The prior generation "E", when introduced some seven years ago, started a design trend with its elliptical headlights, but was beginning to look dated in the fast-moving world of automotive styling.

Those sloped oval headlights return, but they are attached to a sleek sedan body with a wedge shape that is inspired by sports coupe design. The athletic appearance is not a façade, as the new "E" is more sporty and fun to drive, while at the same time delivering the kind of luxury driving experience demanded by motorists in this segment.

The new E-Class is larger in all dimensions than the previous model. Wheelbase is up by 21 mm (0.8 in), length increases by 8 mm (0.3 in), width is up by 23 mm (0.9 in), and it is taller by 13 mm (0.5 in). However, it looks no larger thanks to its flowing style.

Indeed, the arched roof and sweeping C-pillars combine with the flared wheel arches and larger-section tires for a road-hugging stance and "lower" look. The front end is noticeably sleeker, providing a sportier appearance and better aerodynamics.

The coefficient of drag has been reduced from 0.29 to 0.27 on the new model, thanks to such details as underbody paneling and optimized wheel arch shape. The bumper air intakes open and close automatically depending upon the cooling needs of the engine. When closed, the Cd is reduced by three percent.
