Although the minivan has recently been entered on the endangered-species list, some manufacturers are still working hard on creating the ideal and best family vehicle. Toyota's Sienna, introduced in 1998, has long been regarded as one of the best picks in the segment. For 2007, the Sienna gets a number of improvements to make sure that it remains on the top of shopper's lists.

Looking for the "Cadillac of minivans"? Get yourself a Toyota Sienna XLE AWD Limited.

First and foremost is the 266-hp 3.5L V6. Its power and refinement bring it to the summit of the horsepower war. The 5-speed autobox is as smooth as anyone could ever want. Together, they provide plenty of get-up and go for everybody's needs. The minivan's ride is plush and stable. Steering is light and the brakes afford better feel and feedback than many other Toyota products.

The 2006 facelift is well executed and makes the Sienna more attractive and modern-looking. On board, the comfortable cabin is a pleasure to spend multiple hours in. The seats are fairly supportive while dashboard ergonomics are also passable. Overall, fit and finish are top-drawer like every Toyota vehicle.

Perhaps the Sienna's weakest point is its pricing. My tester, which retails for just over $51,000, does not include navigation or a rear DVD entertainment system. The Honda Odyssey, the Sienna's nemesis, has both items and retails for about $3,500 less, which works out to their combined value. The Toyota may have AWD that the Honda does not offer but the near $4,000 gap would be the same if both minivans were identically equipped.

The Sienna's cabin is roomy and comfortable; perfect for a long haul.

The Sienna remains a sensible choice but will it be able to compete with the onslaught of 7/8-passenger crossovers including the new 2008 Highlander?
