Lake Louise, Alberta - We were invited to the Rockies for the media launch of Kia's freshly updated Sorento. It's not a complete makeover, but the changes and improvements are noteworthy.

While Kia only sold the 2007 model in limited numbers, such an event is a clear sign that the small Korean automaker is firmly committed to boost the sales of its midsize SUV.

Exterior changes for 2008 are rather subtle.

Minor visual changes

Outside, the overall shape of the Sorento remains the same, but there are new headlights and taillights as well as a revised front grille.

Meanwhile, the interior is attractive with what looks like quality materials and a well-executed layout. Like the previous model, the controls are ergonomically positioned and easy to use while driving, including the HVAC buttons.

The Sorento is easy to access and the seats are comfortable. However, the driving position is fairly high; actually, I could not lower the cushion at a height that would suit my body type. Out back, access proves to be more difficult because the door opening is not very large.

The seats in LX trim are covered with cloth, while the LX Luxury model adds leather upholstery and heated seats with power adjustments for the driver.

Now with a choice of two engines
The Sorento now offers two 24-valve DOHC V6 engines. In LX trim, the 3.3L mill produces 242 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed automatic transmission. On-demand 4WD comes standard and the towing capacity is 1,590 kilos (3,500 pounds).

The LX Luxury model boasts a 3.8L V6 that generates 262 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. And unlike the base Sorento, this one can tow up to 2,268 kilos (5,000 pounds).

Ride comfort
Despite the 20-hp gap, I did not notice a significant difference between the two SUVs in terms of performance. I should point out that Kia made us drive in the mountains most of the time and that we regularly had to push the engine to climb up the hills.

The 2008 Sorento starts at $32,495 $ (LX model).
