Mazda seems to have developed the good habit of offering very attractive cars, starting with the RX-8. Nowadays, when looking at the Japanese automaker's lineup, one immediately notices that every model shares some similarities with the legendary coupe. Mazda also seems to be feeding off success -- the CX-9 was awarded the title of North American Truck of the Year by auto journalists at the 2008 NAIAS, in Detroit.

The CX-9 looks strikingly similar to its smaller brother, the CX-7.

The CX-9 looks strikingly similar to its smaller brother, the CX-7. However, the former appears to be more assertive and more refined, both in terms of styling and detail quality. The most impressive thing about this full-size crossover is the unique body shape, with sleek, gorgeous lines. The muscular front fenders make it instantly recognizable.

Of course, the interior has not been overlooked. In GT trim, four vertical wood strips embellish the door panels and center stack, while piano black accents are found on the steering wheel. Talk about a clever way to outline the cockpit! Fit and finish as well as material match are elaborately executed and pleasant to look at.

Likewise, the many features and amenities have been well thought out, except for the cupholders which are oddly positioned. Yet, overall ergonomics are impeccable. The sound quality of the audio system is definitely worth mentioning; with 10 speakers, it's arguably one of the best units in the category.

Access might pose a problem. Shorter folks, for instance, will find side steps useful. Everybody else will have an easy time climbing on board, although people over six feet tall should watch their head because the roofline is low and intrusive, both in the front and in the back.

Given the size of the Mazda CX-9, owners benefit from plenty of space for carrying passengers and their luggage. Those sitting in the first and second rows will find ample room to feel at ease. On the other hand, the third-row seat is clearly designed for children.
