It was worth the .5-year wait
Dear Mazda,
It's been a while since the 3 has been on sale without any major changes. Now, I know the age-old saying that if it isn't broken you shouldn't fix it, but the car has been rather unchanged since the fall of 2003.

Now, I've been expecting a redesigned 3 for 2009, but I noticed that you just introduced a 2008.5 model, and it looks exactly the same as the 2008. What gives?

We consider the Mazda3 Sport as a hatchback.

Dear Consumer,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Mazda3. You are right, our sales figures indicate that the current-generation model fulfills the needs of a great deal of customers in Canada, and we currently are about to launch the new 2009 Mazda6 mid-size sedan. Our Tribute compact SUV will also get some powertrain improvements this fall, so as you can see, we are very busy.

Is it a wagon or a hatchback?

Dear Mazda,
I can't figure out exactly what the 3 Sport is. Do you call it a station wagon or a hatchback? Also, I've noticed that the new 2008.5 model now has a GX trim level; can you tell me more about it? I heard that the radio can finally read MP3 files, is that true? Thanks in advance.

Dear Consumer,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Mazda3 Sport. It is neither a station wagon nor a hatchback, but rather the most versatile compact car on the market. Okay, since you probably want a real answer and not some catchy marketing tag, we consider it as a hatchback.

As for the Mazda3 Sport GX, we are proud to introduce a new base trim level, which is powered by the 148-hp, 2.0-liter engine that is found in GX and GS sedan models. As standard equipment, it gets 15-inch steel wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, 6 airbags and, as you've mentioned, a CD player that reads MP3 files.

The Mazda3 Sport GX starts out at $17,895, and a $1,295 Comfort Package adds power windows and heated mirrors, remote keyless entry, wheel-mounted audio controls, a rear spoiler and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The new base trim level Mazda3 Sport GX comes equipped with the 2.0-liter engine.
