What if, all of a sudden, you really needed a pickup truck? Not a dinosaur-sized, heavy-duty rig like the Dodge Ram or Ford F-150, but a small, practical and much more fuel-efficient truck -- would the Chevy Colorado ever cross your mind?

The Chevy Colorado might lack some sex appeal, but it looks much more assertive than its rivals.

Sadly, I would have to say no... at least not based on current market data. The Colorado is not exactly a leader in the small pickup truck segment. True, the competition is fierce. While showing signs of age, both the Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series win over buyers with their proven track record and affordable pricing.

Solid, commanding stance
The Chevy Colorado might lack some sex appeal, but it looks much more assertive than its rivals. The blocky front section adds presence, while the tall profile gives it a distinctive character (even though the Ranger is slightly taller in reality).

In fact, the Colorado stands so proudly on the road that you would probably think it's way larger than it actually is. In truth, it remains a modestly-sized package no matter what configuration or trim level you select.

My Crew Cab tester was basically a multi-passenger model with a pair of rear-hinged doors in the back. Access sure is tricky, but you have to remember that the Colorado is far from a family vehicle. Functionality is the operative theme -- the heck with comfort, especially passengers'!

There's also a wide selection of configurations and cabs, not to mention 2WD or 4WD, so buyers can find a model that suits their specific needs.

Engine galore
Wait, there's more. The Colorado comes with an equally long list of powertrains. For 2009, a new V8 is even available on some models, although my LT tester ($29,380) was powered by the mid-level, inline 5-cylinder engine. This 242-horsepower mill is more than adequate for the tasks at hand. Of course, towing capacity is limited, but the payload is as generous as one could wish, especially for this type of pickup.

My LT tester ($29,380) was powered by the mid-level, inline 5-cylinder engine.
