The private jet
Driving a Mercedes-Benz E 550 is like flying aboard your own private jet. In divine comfort occupants enjoy the prowess of a smooth, potent powertrain that effortlessly gets them where they want to go. It’s hard not to find yourself looking down on the masses in such a refined machine!

This car runs in an exclusive circle, a circle with very few rivals. In fact, the few people who select this model will admit it’s better this way. If the whole neighbourhood cruised around in an E 550, its exclusivity would be short-lived indeed.

The E 550’s select entourage distinguishes itself by the quintessential V8 engine, an engine that has to flirt with the 400-hp mark. These are also cars whose price, once options have been selected and taxes calculated, falls into the $100,000 range.

The Audi S5 and BMW M3 fit this description well, at least when price and horsepower are the determining factors. You could also add the BMW 650i to this short list considering its equally powerful engine, though its price is way up there with the Jaguar XK.

From CLK to E
Within the Mercedes-Benz range, the E-Class Coupe is the successor to the CLK. With this up-level manoeuvre, the brand’s strategists are hinting at the car’s repositioning.

Admittedly, the new moniker is founded on tangible characteristics: improved standard equipped reminiscent of an E-Class sedan, technological innovations also borrowed from the latter and an exterior design clearly marking it as a member of the family – the E-Class family. You’ve probably gotten the picture. Yes, we now have to think “E Class.”

The Stuttgart manufacturer is serving up two variations of its new coupe. The E 350, motivated by a 3.5-litre V6 generating 268 hp, and the E 550, benefiting from a potent, 5.5-litre, V8 mill. The 382-hp motor is also found under the hood of the 2010 E 550 and CLS 550 sedans. It gets the ML 550 crossover moving too, as well as the most affordable SL cabrio, the SL 550.
