In addition to off-kilter marketing, the new Q looked somewhat unconventional in that it didn't receive a front grill until 1994. This unconventionality may have been too extreme for the business set at which the car was targeted. Regardless, I believe the Q's odd design was groundbreaking. I personally like the front emblem described by journalists at the time as a "giant belt buckle" and the solid metal, oval shaped door handles that also garnered much criticism. The overall design of the 1991 to 1996 Q45 is well proportioned and pleasing to the eye.

Design issues aside the Q45 is an awesome family sedan, even by today's standards. While its main competitor, the Lexus LS 400, emphasized luxury and comfort, the Q45 emphasized performance and handling.

Apart from receiving a traditional-style waterfall grille, chrome exterior trim and several small interior redesigns halfway through the model run, the first generation Q45 changed very little over its six-year run. Fortunately one such upgrade included cupholders in 1994. But mechanically, the Q45 didn't sellout and retained its high-performance edge over the Lexus LS 400.

That edge came in the form of a 4.5 liter (274 cu in) 32 valve fuel injected V8 that punched out 278 horsepower and a threatening 292 pound-feet of torque. And when the torque rating exceeds horsepower, the engineers have been doing their homework. This is an engine that loves to work but seldom has to, although when it does hold on to your hairpiece.

Torque is immediate. Punch the throttle from standstill and if the traction control is deactivated, expect to leave behind two black strips composed of the same rubber that was previously attached to your rear tires. To aid in traction and prevent unintentional wheel-spin, the big Q is programmed with electronic traction control and equipped with a posi-traction rear-end.
