Careful Camaro shopping can lead to a fun and rewarding car
The 2010 Camaro is all over the streets and the big screen, and enthusiasts are getting Camaro fever in a big way. They're not all longing for the new model of course, as the last-generation Camaro still has a loyal following of owners and fans. It still fetches fairly big bucks as a used car buy, too.

On sale from 1993 to 2002, the fourth-generation Camaro went through numerous changes and well over 30 years of production before declining sales killed it off. Camaro was available with V6 or V8 power and manual or automatic transmissions, depending on the model in question. Maximum factory power was rated at well over 300 ponies, and Camaro was available in a coupe or convertible body style, as well as with T-Tops.

Opt for the V8-powered Camaro, and you'll find a 5.7 litre LT1 or LS1 V8, depending on the year. V8 Camaro models started off with 275 horsepower, though this number climbed eventually to peak at 325. Various suspension and brake tweaks were made as the car progressed as well-- so performance buffs should opt for as new a model as their budget allows.

A four-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission was available with the V8. If you're not after a used Camaro for its underhood firepower, you'll likely find the standard 3.4 or 3.8 litre V6 engine moves the car along just fine.

Owners of gen-four Camaro's tend to rave about the powerful stereo system, looks, and performance of the engine. Most also like the simple and easy to use interior layout and relatively easy-to-drive character of the car. Numerous Camaro drivers report that their 'chick magnets' will beat any Mustang or 'rice burner' at a traffic light race.

Complaints include an uncomfortable hump in the footwell, poor visibility and hefty fuel consumption with the V8. Interior build quality and materials seem to lead to various squeaks and rattles as the cars age, and the seats and driving position get mixed reactions, too.

Like most any used performance car, ownership can be either a rewarding or horrific and expensive experience. Most Camaro owners are enthusiasts to take care of their machines-- though abuse is a very real possibility. This can prematurely wear out drivetrain components and reduce the functional life of the vehicle, especially if the machine in question has been deprived of its regular maintenance requirements, too.
