Last-generation SLK loved for refinement and style, but standard German car and convertible checks apply
Also, be sure to check that no ‘check-engine’ lights are illuminated in the instrument cluster, and that the engine idles and performs smoothly. A failed mass air flow sensor may illuminate the check-engine light and cause poor performance, too.

Swipe a napkin or paper towl around the inside of the exhaust tip and have a look at what winds up on it. Dry soot is typically ok, but oily or ‘wet’ soot could indicate worn piston rings or failing seals within the supercharger on SLK 230 models.

Shoppers should note that leaking engine or transmission seals will typically manifest themselves in the form of a fluid leak which may puddle beneath the car or drip down the side of the engine or transmission. Be sure to have the underside of the SLK you’re considering inspected for leaks like these, and examine the tires, brakes and suspension in the process.

End of the day, the last-generation SLK isn’t the used market’s most affordable or inexpensively-maintained roadster model-- though a well maintained unit at a decent price should provide plenty of driving enjoyment.

Remember to visit a Mercedes dealership for a pre-purchase inspection, just to be safe.
