A lengthy list of problems plagues early LS models
You'll also find the availability of a power sunroof, motorized tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the standard suite of power accessories. Safety was covered off by available traction control (depending on the year), as well as front, side, and side-curtain airbags. An alarm system and stability control were available as well.

Owners that have taken to the internet seem to like the LS's room, handling and ride, power and price- and most share stories of their cars being complemented on its great looks. Many praise the powerful sound-system, too.

Reading through hundreds of online posts by LS owners, nearly no complaints arose from the way it rode or handled, or the way it was built. Trouble is, many owners complain about various mechanical issues as the cars age- especially in the earlier model years.

Niggling engine power problems, including stalling, misfiring or the inability to start, may be caused by a leaky fuel hose clamp causing an internal leak.

Listen closely for any signs of droning or buzzing as you travel along at a variety of highway speeds- as vibrations are often reported from the driveshaft or half-shafts during cruising.

Be sure to check for proper operation of all interior accessories- including the climate controlled seats, stereo and CD changer. Several owners complained about a malfunctioning air conditioner and automatic climate control system- so be sure these work properly as well.

Pay special attention to the operation of all four power windows when checking out a used LS. Most owners report problems with broken window regulators, which will prevent the window from working in either direction.

It seems to be a very common issue, joined by moisture-prone headlights, wheel bearings, front end bushings and clogged catalytic converters. After a test drive, pop the hood and smell for burning oil- which could indicate a somewhat common leaky valve cover gasket problem as well.

Note that most of the above problems seem to be far more prevalent on earlier model machines- namely 2000 and 2001. Later models, especially after 2003, seem to have far less of their owners complaining in online forums.

When finalizing your purchase on a used Lincoln LS, strive for a model that has a full service history available. A dealer maintained unit would be a wise choice, as would a model as new as your budget allows.

The LS will offer plenty of style and driving pleasure- and poor resale value means you'll probably find a great deal on one. It may be wise to pay for an extended warranty though, just in case.
