When Toyota's Tundra pickup truck was released in mid-1999 as a 2000 model year vehicle, skeptics could only guess how a full sized pickup from a Japanese manufacturer would compete with the likes of Dodge, Ford and GM. Despite comparatively small sales volumes, the Tundra was a hit- winning honours like "Truck of the Year" from Motor Trend as well as a 'Best Full Sized Truck' trophy from Consumer Reports.
The second generation Tundra is now on sale- and after a rough start, it seems that Toyota has ironed out some bugs to send the latest model down the same road to success as the original. With new Tundra models now available, you'll likely find a good assortment of used ones at a reasonable price.
Selection is decent- and several trims and engine options are available. In base or SR5 trim, Tundra could be fitted with a 3.4 liter V6 with 190 horsepower, or a 4.7 liter dual-cam V8 with 245. The V6 was eventually bumped to 4 litres of displacement and 245 horsepower, necessitating an increase in power for the V8 up to 282 horses- depending on the year in question.
Transmission choices were a five or six speed manual, or a four or five speed automatic- depending on the year and engine. Look for body styles in regular cab, access cab or double cab to match with your need for passenger capacity. All models shared the same wheelbase and frame, so there aren't any heavier-duty rigs available. Though Tundra will tow, if you require a dual-axle setup or anything bigger than a half-ton, you'll need to look elsewhere.
Expect to find features like four-wheel ABS, an off-road package, fog-lamps, power accessories, leather seating and captain's chairs. Dealers offered a fairly comprehensive selection of add-on parts, including cargo organizers, wheel locks, bed-liners and audio system upgrades. All of this to say that there's probably a used Tundra that's just perfect for your requirements- and a healthy aftermarket means that you'll be able to customize it to your heart's content.
