Top marks for Lexus's reliable flagship
I had a business strategy teacher at Laurentian University named Professor Sina who would use Lexus as an example of how a company can successfully penetrate a new marketplace. In the case of Lexus, he told me that they once had a very simple goal- to build machines as good as Mercedes-Benz, but for a third less.

That's not an easy task per se, but if current indications are any reflection, their simple goal has paid off. Lexus is rated highly in initial quality, owner satisfaction and resale value. Like parent-company Toyota, their machines generally come off as worry-free investments that will perform flawlessly for years.

Lexus's flagship sedan has been called the LS since its introduction back in 1989. Lexus updated the LS models throughout their generations, helping the cars meet the needs and wants of owners and dealers alike.

The fourth generation car is now on sale- boasting an available hybrid drive system, self-parking assist, massaging seats, voice-command and plenty of other high-tech features. If you're after a luxurious flagship but don't want to shell out six digits to get one, consider a third generation LS model. They've never been more likely to be readily available on dealer lots, given up as trade-ins on the new model.

When shopping, expect a lengthy list of equipment including oscillating climate control vents, wood grain trim, dual glove boxes, fully power-adjustable seating with heat and chill, as well as rain sensing wipers. A Mark Levinson audio system, laser-guided cruise control, park assist and ultraviolet cabin air filtration could be fitted too. There were even a cooler and vibrating massage seats available, alongside a hands-free phone system. If you've ever wanted to drive your very own USS Enterprise, this is it.

The last-generation LS didn't have warp-drive, but power from its V8 engine was sufficient to move it around in a hurry. A 4.3 litre unit, it sent 290 horsepower to the rear wheels by an automatic transmission. Five or six gears were available, depending on the year.

In addition to the powerful and bulletproof engine, a Euro-tuned suspension was also available, making the LS about as sporty as a rolling business lounge gets.
