Hyundai prepares to duke it out in the entry-level luxury segment
All this power hits the rear wheels via a 5-speed "Shiftronic" automatic transmission. This is one of the better 'manumatic' gearboxes on the market, similar in execution to those used by BMW and Acura. While in the drive position the XG shifts smoothly, other than a rough spot between 2nd and 3rd gear. Whether this is specific to this particular car, or XGs on the whole is yet to be determined.

Stopping comes by way of 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD, an electronic brake force distribution system with the ability to sense passenger weight distribution and adjust brake force automatically, which in turn improves handling when braking. It all sounds good, as driving throughout Vancouver gives a person plenty of opportunity to test panic avoidance maneuvers. The addition of an electronic traction control system is an asset as well.

Walking around the XG 300, it's easy to see influences from other upscale brands. A few people asked me if it was a Lincoln. Considering it's bereft of Hyundai badges on its imposing chrome grille, Lincoln isn't a bad guess. From behind, a hint of Bentley is noticeable in the tail lamps and sculptured deck lid. The profile, although less distinct, is attractive. All in all, the XG is subtly styled, elegant yet not vying for too much attention.

Do the Japanese, American and European luxury manufacturers need to hide and take cover from this Korean threat? Not too likely, but the XG does pose a serious threat to competitive models in the lower end of the luxury market. It's well equipped, attractive and performs quite well, especially considering its reasonable price. This is a winning combination, and anyone considering an entry-level luxury car should take it for a ride.
