When climbing inside the chrome 'Boxster S' script on the doorsill catches the eye. Aluminum trim, surrounding large silver-faced gauges, peer through a 3-spoke steering wheel, replacing the standard 4-spoke wheel. Aluminum trim shows up on the emergency brake and door handles as well. Porsche has addressed past criticism and added softer more attractive plastics to the dash, reducing glare to the windshield simultaneously. The seats fit both small and large frames with ample lateral support, but heated cushions are optional. Its lined convertible top reduces wind noise noticeably, which by the way, enhances stereo performance. However, the audio system, while performing adequately, is a logistics nightmare. Prepare to spend an evening with the owner's manual if you ever plan to make sense of it.

With the Boxster, gone are the days of manhandling a cumbersome tonneau cover over awkward snaps that just don't seem to fit. Its convertible mechanism is head of the soft-top class, stowing neatly under an all-metal cover. You'll need to pull on the emergency brake before the top will drop, which incidentally is now available in three colours. Although this 12-second procedure makes it possible to let the sunshine in at a stoplight, you may actually need to get out of the car to crimp the scratchproof plastic rear window. My recommendation? Don't bother. It's on warranty.

Unlike the majority of its roadster competitors, the Boxster is practical for everyday use. I found enough room under the front hood to store a 19" monitor, keyboard and a few peripherals, with adequate space in the rear trunk for the tower, duffel bag and camera equipment including a large tripod. To put this into perspective, the Boxster holds nearly twice the storage of the BMW Roadster or Honda S2000 - hopefully enough day-to-day practicality for even the most pragmatic enthusiast to justify its purchase.
