RSX a safe sports-car bet, but watch for upgrades
The RSX Type S is the model for you if you're after something exciting and quick but grown-up at the same time. The boy-racer stuff was covered off well, but it also boasted decent fuel economy and top-notch safety. Note that the Type S is the model most likely to have been driven hard and abused-- so extra care is advisable in shopping for one.

After a test-drive, you'll want to pay special attention to the condition of the RSX's consumable parts. Be sure there's plenty of pad left on the brakes, and that they aren't squealing, which could indicate the need for a brake job. Check tire tread depth and condition, noting any abnormal wear across the tread width that could indicate alignment issues.

The clutch on an RSX with a manual gearbox is also important to check out. With a sensible driver, a clutch can last the life of the vehicle. Conversely, an abusive or inexperienced driver can fry a clutch assembly in months. Be sure the clutch feels 'grabby' and doesn't slip when shifting quickly. If you feel slippage, it could be worn out.

Suspicious? You may be able to coax the clutch to slip by applying full throttle at a relatively low speed in a relatively high gear.

Also, note the presence of any 'grinding' while shifting gears in a model with a manual gearbox, as this could indicate abuse that's led to worn out gear synchronizers. Check the engine oil and have all vital fluids changed if you aren't sure of the vehicles service history, just to be safe.

You'll want to note any owner-added upgrades, which are common in the used RSX market. Common and largely acceptable are intake and exhaust systems, provided they're installed properly and don't violate any noise or emission laws. Suspension and wheel upgrades should be checked for proper installation, fitment and legal compliance.

More serious upgrades may include a turbocharger, supercharger, engine management system or nitrous oxide injection. These should be avoided by those unfamiliar with their operation in the context of the RSX's K20 engine. Improperly installed, any of the above systems could blow the engine to smithereens with no notice. Remember, nothing ruins a Sunday afternoon drive like firing a rod through the side of your engine block.

In any case, an inspection from a mechanic is a good idea if you're in doubt. When buying a modified car, you don't want to wind up with someone else's problem. That said, if you find a good deal on a used RSX that fits your budget and priorities, you're ready to join a community of largely satisfied owners.
