Standard power is supplied by Jeep's familiar 195-hp, 4.0-L inline 6-cylinder, while last year's 235-hp 4.7-L V8 is still optional. For 2002 an all-new high-output version of the 4.7-L V8 churns out 265-hp and a whopping 325 lb-ft of torque for a noticeable performance gain - 15% over the standard V8. The new engine and its 5-speed automatic transmission (introduced in 2001) are optional on Limited models with the 'K' package and standard on the new Overland.

Overland? If you're not familiar with the Overland name, look up 'Jeep history' on an internet search engine and you'll find volumes of historic information on the Willys-Overland company - yes the same people who designed and built one of North American's automotive icons, the WWII Jeep. Heritage aside, the new Overland adds authentic redwood burl trim, premium suede and leather seats, a 10-disc CD changer, 17" alloy wheels, metallic paint colored side rock rails, unique front and rear fascias, plus Overland badges and embroidered floor mats. The Overland also incorporates suspension enhancements improving on and off road prowess as well as undercarriage skid plates to protect it during wilderness forages.

The Overland's standard Quadra-Drive 4WD system combines Jeeps Quadra Trac II transfer case with Vari-Lok axles allowing it to transfer nearly 100% of available torque to a single wheel, helpful if up to the doorsills in mud or snow. Laredo and Limited models come with standard 4-wheel drive, featuring the Selec-Trac full-time transfer-case with low-range. The Quadra-Trac II on-demand transfer case with low-range is standard on Limited and optional on the Laredo. While all this techno-speak might not mean a great deal to those not fully immersed in Jeep's 4x4 lingo, what it does translate into is impressive off road driving behavior. Still most SUV owners spend little time clambering up mountain goat trails or wading through shallow rivers on their way to private fishing holes. Grand Cherokee owners, however, appreciate knowing that they can get uncivilized if they want to, yet still enjoy very civilized drivability everyday.
