Torque converter and electronic control refinements maintain the Lexus standard for seamless gear changes, while the grade-sensitive transmission responds to driving conditions, delaying upshifts to sustain power on inclines and holding the lower gear to use engine braking on descents. Lexus has also equipped the ES 300 with a new electronic ("drive by wire") throttle control to improve engine response. The result is that the high-performance V6 engine generates a wide torque curve for immediate response at any speed, and achieves an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) certification for fuel economy and emissions performance.
ENHANCED HANDLING AND ACTIVE SAFETY MEAN SMOOTH RIDE
Using experience gained from the flagship LS 430, Lexus refined the ES 300 suspension to provide a more engaging driving experience while improving smoothness of ride. Mounted to more rigid anti-vibration subframes, the four-wheel independent suspension now provides even tighter handling.
In response to changing road surfaces, vehicle speed, driver steering and braking inputs, and even vertical movement, optional Adaptive Variable Suspension system (AVS) enhances ride and driving quality by continuously tuning each wheel's shock absorber damping rate. The driver can choose between Comfort and Sport modes, or two intermediate settings. For 2002, the AVS system has been refined to provide better road and steering feel and quicker turn-in response.
The ES 300 is equipped with new, larger ventilated front disc brakes, solid rear discs with tandem boosters and 4-sensor, 3-channel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and the advanced Brake Assist feature are also standard. EBD monitors all four wheels for lock-up, while Brake Assist can determine an emergency braking situation and, if the driver has not applied enough pedal pressure to engage the ABS, supplements the braking power applied.
