Last-gen Z4 looks like a reasonably reliable convertible-- but standard checks are mandatory
On a test-drive, a few pointers will help aspiring Z4 drivers ensure they’re getting a good deal that won’t cost them big bucks for repairs down the line.

Approach any used Z4 with three key words in mind to guide your inspection and test-drive: ‘German’, ‘Convertible’ and ‘Sportscar’. Being several years old and of German descent (albeit American-built), the Z4 should be checked exhaustively for electronics issues. Shoppers will want to spend a few minutes ensuring all cabin accessories are working properly, and that no check-engine lights are illuminated. Roughness, sporadic idle or ‘missing’ from the engine may indicate a bad sensor, too.

On that note, the Z4’s driveline lineup looks to be fairly solid, with minimal systematic or troublesome issues to report. Some owners have reported an overheating problem though-- so be extra sure to maintain the cooling system in your Z4 for optimal performance.

Other documented issues include side-marker lights that fall off, as well as inconsistent response from the power steering system depending on the outside temperature. Be sure to ask the former owner of the Z4 you’re considering if they’ve experienced this problem or had it rectified.

Onto the next key word-- ‘Convertible’. When shopping for a used Z4, shoppers should operate the power convertible roof mechanism up and down several times and observe its behavior. If the roof mechanism looks like it’s straining, binding or seizing, a potentially expensive problem may need to be addressed.

Inspect the roof fabric for signs of rips or tearing which could allow moisture into the top or the cabin. Avoid models with patches or duct-tape on the roof, and ensure the rear-window defroster is working properly, too. Finally, check the trunk and footwells for signs of moisture, rust or mildew. Ditto the area where the roof folds into when it’s not in use.

The final key word is ‘Sportscar’. Given the Z4’s intentions, chances are it’s been driven hard. This in itself isn’t a worrisome thing-- though it could leave brake pads, tires and the clutch fried if the former owner was fonder of burnouts and drifting than of maintenance. Be sure to check the condition of these consumable parts before agreeing to purchase. It might save you buying a car that needs new tires and a brake job.

End of the day, if you’re able to find a good deal on a Z4 that passes all of the above checks, you’re well on your way to upscale topless motoring. Remember, if in doubt, a technician at your nearest BMW dealership would love to give the car a going-over for you.
