The updated SUV feels more direct during turn-in as well due to new variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering that replaces the old-tech recirculating-ball system. Part of the Expedition's newfound alacrity directly relates to its stiffer structure, tightened up by 70% overall. It's lower to the ground too, reducing the center of gravity and consequently easing ingress and egress.

Once inside there's increased passenger headroom and legroom plus a larger cargo area, the latter resulting in 585 L (20.6 cu ft) with all three rows in place, 1,725 L (60.9 cu ft) behind the 2nd row with the 3rd row folded flat and 3,128 L (110.5 cu ft) when both the 2nd and 3rd rows are tumbled down. The load area looks massive when fully taken advantage of, perfect for camping when it's too rainy to set up the tent.

Getting to the camp ground is made easier due to Ford's ControlTrac four-wheel drive, standard on the Eddie Bauer edition. The system incorporates a transfer case that splits torque from front to back in part-time 4HI and full-time A4WD modes. If equipped its optional AdvanceTrac traction control system transfers torque to each side depending on specific need via electronic braking. Together with its ample 226 mm (8.9 in) ground clearance the Expedition has as little problem plowing through deep snow or traversing mud strewn back country as it does keeping the family safe from unforeseen patches of ice while taking the kids to school in the morning.
