On another level, while four-door coupes are growing in number (Mazda RX8, Jaguar RD-6 concept) the CLS takes a different approach. Rather than having two smaller rear-hinged doors, Benz has used proper full-size doors. It's a much easier and conventional way of packaging the car as each set of doors can open independently, and don't box front and rear passengers, who just happen to open both doors at the same time while in a parking lot, into an impasse. As far as concept cars from Mercedes-Benz go, the Vision CLS is rather conventional looking, considering the many different shapes which the car could have been shaped. That said, conventional can be nice sometimes.

Where Mercedes sporty coupes feature circular headlamps, the CLS draws from the large S-Class where amorphous-looking single-piece headlights have been moulded and contoured to the shape of front fenders. Between it all, is a variation of the traditional three-bar grille with the three-pointed star smack in the middle.

The car's profile, however, is quite different, with flowing A and C pillars and high door sills forming small side windows. A sharply creased edge follows the entire length of the car, ending at stretched out trunk and bumpers.

Though the CLS resembles a traditional coupe, its opulent looks aren't enough to literally carry it. While a large V8 of V12 engine might be expected, M-B has equipped this Vision with a fun, yet environmentally friendly powerplant. At first the twin-turbocharged common rail 6-cylinder diesel powerplant might not seem to correlate with a coupe's characteristics, however, it's all within the CLS' call of duty. With 265 horsepower on board, the diesel six slots in between the run of the mill 320 series gasoline engine and the larger 500 series V8 engine.
