I stated just prior that my test car was 'more or less' base. The more or less part is Saab's Launch and Touring packages, both of which dress it up considerably. Starting with the former, 16-inch alloy wheels replace the standard 15-inch alloys along with 205/50 R16 upgraded tires. Also included is a sport suspension, a tighter tuning of the already capable independent front and rear setup with anti-roll bars at each end, premium audio with a 6CD in-dash changer, a sunroof, power driver's seat and color-keyed exterior trim - black on the base model. Altogether the Launch Package costs $3,000. The $1,500 Touring Package adds auto climate control, bixenon headlamps, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an integrated garage door opener.

Its attractive dash is purposely devoid of wood. Instead it's comprised of high quality plastics formed into a uniquely Saab-shaped dash and instrument panel. A trip computer is integrated into the tastefully small LED display screen that also incorporates radio functions, which show up on an additional windshield-height display further up the dash as well. That display also warns of mechanical glitches. I only know this because it constantly reminded me that it needed to see a dealer for a headlight leveling problem - nothing too serious unless you were the blinded one driving towards me.
