Base, XR, XRS, FWD, 4WD, let's talk about what all these trim levels refer to. First of all, standard equipment on the base FWD model includes a lot of the usual economy car features plus a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system, tinted glass, chrome tailpipe, remote mirrors and intermittent wipers front and back. A 'B-package' can be ordered that adds 16-inch alloy wheels, filtered air conditioning, power door locks, keyless entry and illuminated entry.

If you want more, the XL combines B-package goodies with driver's seat height adjustment, power windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-wrapped shift knob (on the automatic only), color-keyed exterior trim, power remote mirrors and variable intermittent wipers. By the way, the Matrix 4WD splits its features between base and XR models, with few deviations to the FWD cars.

The XLS not only includes the previously mentioned performance upgrades, but two more speakers and a cassette player to the stereo, a leather-wrapped manual shift knob, 115-volt accessory outlet on the dash, an anti-theft system as well as a full body-skirt package to make it look as fast as it goes.

All models receive a sporty chrome trimmed electronic instrument package incorporating speedometer, tachometer, water temperature and outside temperature gauges, plus a dual trip odometer. The dash itself is constructed of high-quality soft plastics with attractive metallic trim. A sensational 3-spoke tilt steering wheel adds to its sporting nature, offering perfect 9 o'clock - 3 o'clock hand positioning with comfortable thumb indentations. The comfortable seats seem constructed of durable fabric thus they should hold up well after years of service.
