A decent performance for used F150, but avoid early years
Shoppers will note a multitude of bed and cab configurations to pick from, as well as some high-end interior features. Further complicating the selection process is an array of trim levels and special editions like the FX4, King Ranch, Lariat Harley Davidson and so forth. In fact, the Harley Davidson edition F-150 even came with a supercharged 450 horsepower engine- making it a rare but potent buy in a used muscle-truck.

Common issues include problems with power windows on early models, especially in 2004 and 2005. Scores of owners reported failed window regulators or having side windows fall into the door- requiring an expensive repair.

Other owners report premature wearing of brake components, especially concerning front rotors. These seem to warp and wear out at a faster-than-expected pace, so on a test-drive, note the feel of the brake pedal and listen for squealing from the truck's front end. A spongy pedal or a high-pitched metallic screech at low speeds usually indicates that a brake-job is in order.

Rear differentials are known to be a potential issue on the F-150. These often start making a metallic grinding sound at highway speeds before eventually failing altogether. A rear differential rebuild isn't a cheap repair, so be sure to note any unusual noises, chattering or 'binding' sensations from the rear end.

Another well documented and often-frustrating problem deals with spark-plugs on the 5.4 litre V8 engine. In earlier models, these are very prone to breaking off within the cylinder head, which can quickly become an expensive mess. Newer trucks seem unaffected, but if you're looking at a 2004 or 2005, you may want to determine if the plugs have been changed before.

Other issues dealt with potentially faulty sensors, broken door handles, belt noise, and noisy suspension in cold weather. Recalls mainly concern issues like a possibly-bad fuel tank, an instrument cluster that won't show the ABS warning light when a problem is detected, and potential wiper-motor failure.

Note the service history of your used candidate and make sure things are up to date. If you're unsure, count on a full fluid change and have a mechanic inspect the undercarriage for signs of damage or abuse- just to be on the safe side. Note that trucks which have been used extensively in an off-road setting could be more prone to rust, and that the shape of a used vehicle's interior can be a good indication of how well its owner cared for other parts of it.

The list of common complaints, issues and recalls on the last-generation F-150 is considerably shorter than the generation before it- and the major issues seem to be concentrated mainly into 2004 and 2005.

If your budget allows, it's advisable to opt for a newer model- ideally 2006 or newer.
