Last-gen SRX boasted exciting driving dynamics--but wasn't without its issues
Most SRX owners like the features, pricing, overall value and interior styling of their machines. Power from the V8 engine seems to be more than adequate, and most owners report satisfaction with the SRX’s handing agility and steering feel. It`s reportedly nice to drive in the snow, too.

Owner gripes tend to deal with complicated interior controls, a clumsy factory navigation system, rearward visibility, and the lack of a dedicated cell-phone holder and power outlet. Squeaks and rattles tend to become apparent as the SRX ages, and of course, owners who opt for the V8 engine tend to wish for better fuel economy.

If you’re shopping used, try to test-drive both 6 and 8 cylinder SRX models. Owners who find the V6 model to move adequately can expect better mileage and cheaper maintenance costs in the long run.

The SRX is an award-winning product with a good safety history—but it’s a bit finicky in the reliability department. As such, several checks are vital on a test-drive of a used model.

First and foremost, you’ll want to ‘listen’ to the rear differential for signs of noise. Clicking, moaning or grinding, especially during tight, low-speed corners, could indicate a bad rear differential. This was a well documented SRX problem, and one that’ll prove pricey to fix out of warranty. If in doubt, include a check of the rear differential in a pre-purchase mechanical inspection of the SRX.

As with any new vehicle, shoppers will want to extensively operate all accessories to check for proper functionality. Power seats, mirrors, air conditioning, navigation, all windows, the stereo and steering-wheel mounted controls should be checked out. Note any ‘check engine’ lights or warnings, too.

Check thoroughly for signs of water or moisture in the floor area, especially around the front footwells and the cargo area in back. Lift the carpeting and remove the panel that covers the jack in the rear of the vehicle to be sure. Several owners have reported a leak into the latter area, which could cause mildew or rust.
