Getting up to highway speeds is no problem for the 265-hp high-output 4.7-L V8 equipped Overland, posting a scant 7.8 seconds to 100 km/h. The deep resonating sound of its exhaust is intoxicating as the revs build and velocity increases, all 325 lb-ft of torque at full pulling power. At slightly higher than posted limits it tracks quite well, again not as steadfast in its duties as some of its newer competitors, with ripples and bumps in the roadway a little unsettling for the rear suspension, but hardly disconcerting either. Once having gotten used to a slightly dead center spot, and the associated play in the steering, it was easy to drive fast all day long.

And that steering wheel is so nice. Half carved from authentic walnut and half covered in grippy leather, it's both a sight to behold and pleasure to hold. The steering wheel spokes are replete with buttons for audio and speed control, the former connecting through to an Infinity sound system worthy of its premium designation. A 6-CD changer is integrated directly into the dash, a convenient bit of technology most of the European automakers haven't figured out how to integrate.

The Overland incorporates high quality leather mixed with suede-like alcantara for seats and trim, among the best I've experienced in the domestic crowd and enhanced by standard heated cushions. Strips of the previously mentioned authentic wood span the dash and door panels, beautifully finished and nicely placed into position. I'm actually very impressed with the fit and finish of new Grand Cherokees overall, and the Overland edition especially. Panel gaps are fairly tight, plastics quality is way up and the general layout of controls is up to standards set by imported competition.
