J.D. Power's most recent Initial Quality Study (IQS), however, rates Mazda lower than the industry average in its nameplate ranking, placing 33rd out of 37 brands due to its 157 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) rating, and beaten by the likes of Hyundai (102 PP100), Chrysler (120 PP100), and Kia (153 PP100). The industry average is 119 PP100.

With its ideal mix of attractive styling, impressive driving dynamics and flexible functionality, I'd be proud to call a Mazda6 Sport my own. (Photo: Shawn Pisio, Canadian Auto Press)

On the positive, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave a top 5-star rating for both the driver and front-seat passenger in its frontal crash-test of 2003 Mazda6 sedan. What that means is there's a 10-percent or less chance of a serious injury in a 35-mph frontal crash. While the new 5-door hasn't been tested yet, it should receive the same rating for frontal crashes as the sedan, being that it is identical from the B-pillar forward.

After severe scrutiny the Mazda6 Sport is a winner in my books. While the brand could definitely use a boost up J.D. Power's initial quality charts, the car itself is especially well put together from a visual standpoint at least. It's a car that's sporty enough to get me giddy every time I slide behind the steering wheel, while still delivering the functionality my family of five needs on a day to day basis. I'd be proud to call a Mazda6 Sport my own.
