While a version of the current 302-hp, 339 lb-ft of torque, 5.0-L, 24-valve, SOHC V8 engine is expected in the base model, a massaged AMG variant will also be available producing something close to the current 5.5-L V8's 360-hp. A version of the current 5-speed automatic with sequential shift mode will likely be the transmission offered although rumor has it that a 6-speed automatic is on the way. All four wheels will put power to the pavement.

On the safety front Mercedes-Benz will be fitting its 'Pre-Safe Occupant Protection System' that detects an impending collision and makes preparations for impact. It tightens the seatbelts, moves each seat into the optimal position with regards to airbag deployment, and more. Expect the latest in anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, traction control, stability management and so on.

Mercedes-Benz sees North America as the number one target for the GST, as it originally did and still does with the M-Class SUV. With this in mind their choice of the Tuscaloosa, Alabama manufacturing plant seems logical. Production will commence in the latter part of 2004, according to an announcement made recently at a dealer's conference here in Canada. "With the Grand Sports Tourer DaimlerChrysler will be continuing the success story of the Tuscaloosa site. The outstanding acceptance of the M-Class, which has been produced in Alabama since 1997, shows that we have developed an ideal market for the sport utility vehicle segment in the USA," commented Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Mercedes-Benz PC & smart Sales & Marketing. "As a touring car, station wagon, large-capacity vehicle (read minivan) and sport utility vehicle rolled into one, the Grand Sports Tourer is primarily geared to the needs of the North American market. However, we also see great potential for the Mercedes-Benz GST in Europe due to its high functionality and flexibility". DaimlerChrysler will expend approximately 935 million CAD (600 million USD) expanding Tuscaloosa's production facilities during the next two years in preparation for the GST.
