A 7.0-litre LS7 V8 powers the C6 Z06. It develops 500 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Amongst the host of upgrades are huge 14-inch front brake discs clamped down by six-piston calipers. The rear has 13.4-inch discs and 4-piston calipers. The trick with the Z06 is that it has 20 bake pads or 1 per piston. This way, it benefits from maximum surface contact between pad and disc. With a curb weight of on 1 420 kg, acceleration is very brisk and stopping distances are short. Chevy claims that the car will travel from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds; this is super super-car territory.
The new Z06 is capable of speeds in excess of 304 km/h, or 190 mph. Front wheels are 18 x 9.5-inch with 275/35ZR18 tires and rear wheels are 19 x 12-inch with 325/30ZR19 tires.
The aluminum body structure is one hydroformed unit that attaches to a magnesium cradle. The front fenders are made of carbon fiber. The Corvette's interior, however, is unfortunately covered in sub-par plastics.
Price: Starting at $125,000 (estimated)
Availability: Fall 2005
Auto123.com's impressions:
The Corvette continues to be the budget super-car. As long luxury and opulence are not important and hardcore performance is, the Z06 will not disappoint.
