What about performance?

Um, I think I hear a kettle boiling?... OK, with the same 220 horsepower 225 pound-feet torque 3.5-litre five-banger found in the Colorado, but now having to pull an additional 406 kilograms, the H3 takes a yawn-inducing 10 seconds to get to 100 kilometres per hour. If not quantitatively quicker, the base five-speed stick may at least give the sensation of speed. But once you do get up to those cruising speeds, the smallest of Hummers is also the quietest.

Is there anything else I should look at that compares with the H3?
Admittedly, this is a pretty unique package, especially for the price. If you're looking for a mid-sized SUV with in-yer-face looks and real off-road

capabilities, Jeep's new styled-in-the-box-it-came-in Commander is Trail Rated and starts at $40,995. You may also want to try a Nissan Xterra Off-road at $35,798. Toyota's new FJ Cruiser sits only four, but equipped like our H3 tester, it comes in at $34,440.

And why should I buy this?
If you like the message the Hummer styling cues transmit to the rest of the world, at nearly 50% of the bigger H2's price, plus real off-road capabilities, then welcome to Club Hummer. You can also be comforted with the knowledge that, ironically, the smallest and cheapest Hummer is the best to drive.
