The all-new Jeep Compass will be Jeep's entry-level vehicle. Freshly unveiled as a concept at the last Frankfurt auto show, the mini-Ute will be powered by the same 2.4L I-4 with dual variable valve timing (offering 172 hp and 165 lbs-ft of torque) that will be found in the upcoming Dodge Caliber. A new generation Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT2) is expected as is an optional AWD system.
The styling of the Compass is a mixture of a Jeep front facia, bulging fenders and Pontiac Vibe / Toyota Matrix rear quarters. The Compass' principal competitors will be just about any 5-door hatchback including the Mazda3 Sport, the Vibe/Matrix duo and possibly the Honda Element.
The Compass is being billed as a performance oriented all-purpose do-it-all vehicle. It is doubtful that it will receive Jeep's Trail Rated stamp of approval, although it does indeed feature a full 4x4 system.
