Now for some peace and quiet
The Audi A8 4.2 LWB, including the Sport package with 20-inch wheels and interior leather package, lists for $113,260.

The Jaguar Super V8 is worth mentioning, offering 400 supercharged horsepower and costing $118,000. We can also consider the Lexus LS 460 L as a rival, and equipped with the technology group, costs $110,500.

Perfection has a price.

So the Mercedes-Benz is more expensive than the others, even if we don't check a single option box. And only the A8 offers all-wheel drive. I should also mention that a more-affordable S-Class variant will be available in 2008, the short-wheelbase S450 4MATIC.

Conclusion
My heartbeat rate went way down during this week behind the wheel of the S550. One can only relax while spending time in the silent and comfortable cockpit, and feel good knowing that he or she isn't wasting precious amounts of fuel. And, when the need arises, the car can be plenty quick. At that price point, we expect perfection, and that's what the S550 offers.

Although I prefer the sportier character of BMWs, I must say that this S-Class pleases me very much, despite it costing more than my house. Except for the high price tag compared to its rivals, I can only say good things about this marvellous sedan.

Extremely quiet cockpit
Powerful yet frugal engine
Impeccable fit and finish

Higher price than competitors
Distracting multimedia interface
Not enough gadgets for back-seat occupants
