Saturn's compact SUV will soon, mid-2006, be available as a gasoline-electric hybrid. The basis for the hybrid system will be GM's Ecotec 2.4L I-4 engine mated to an electric precision motor/generator. The combustion engine is equipped with variable valve timing for improved performance.
A nickel metal hydride hybrid battery pack will serve as the second source of energy to run the electric motor/generator. Regenerative braking recharges the batteries and to save of fuel and energy, the Vue will shut off automatically at idle.
GM has plans to introduce this technology into many of its products over the next few years. This affordable hybrid powertrain is so affordable, that it only raises the price of the VUE by $2,000 US.
