At $19,995, the SX4 JX AWD isn't cheap. Add another $1,000 for the automatic transmission, and we're looking at a $21,095 car. For that sum of money, you can get yourself a well-equipped rival, such as a Toyota Matrix XR, a Kia Spectra5 LX Convenience, a Chevrolet HHR LT, a Dodge Caliber R/T and a Ford Focus ZXW SES. None of these offer all-wheel drive, though, except the $23,995 Caliber R/T AWD.

So, it's a question of choice: extra traction in the SX4, or extra features in the others. Personally, I'd skip the benefit of AWD and save some bucks by checking out the front-drive JX, which costs $18,195.

The SX4 AWD will get you anywhere, anytime.

Conclusion

Two years ago, I tested an Aerio sedan and appreciated the car's strong points: lots of equipment for the money, high-quality materials, torquey engine, and great headroom. The car looked a little weird, with its high roof and lower-body spoiler kit.

It's the other way around with the SX4; it lacks some important comfort and convenience features, but looks way much better. But as I said, style is an important factor for car buyers, and that's why I think the SX4 will sell in greater numbers than its Aerio predecessor.

What I like:
Cute looks
Interior space, especially headroom
Good handling

What I don't like:
Light equipment level
