A capable SUV
What the XL7 lacks in comfort, it makes up for in capability. Congratulations to engineers, as the 252-horsepower V6 allows flawless accelerations and brisk passing maneuvers. Even when carrying a full load, this SUV delivers a solid performance.
On the other hand, the transmission is not very responsive and often takes time to change gears. In addition, fuel economy is disappointing at 14 liters per 100 kilometers.
As for the steering, it lives up to the standards of comparably-sized SUVs. On the road, I noticed some body roll in sharp turns, which is normal considering the girth of this vehicle.
The brakes are excellent, delivering powerful stops over short distances. On a negative note, the XL7 has a strong tendency to nosedive during emergency braking maneuvers.
Handling is not a strength of this Suzuki due to its length and weight. Don't expect big thrills on winding country roads.
Final verdict
Buying a Suzuki XL7 is an emotional decision; you basically have to fall in love at first sight. It boasts many good qualities, like power and capability, and as a whole, you could easily learn to live with it despite sub-par fuel economy.
This SUV should not be considered as an alternative to minivans because the third-row seats are not really convenient and they significantly reduce cargo room. You might be looking to make a fashion statement to other soccer parents, but you'll find the price relatively high. Unfortunately, the XL7 faces some pretty tough competition, which makes it even harder to stand out.
