In typical Honda fashion, build quality is beyond reproach, both inside and out. Amenities are aplenty, as is expected from such a premium vehicle. The rearview camera is particularly effective and handy during parking maneuvers. There's a decent number of storage compartments, while the cargo area is fairly vast.

The driver-oriented cockpit further improves life behind the wheel of the MDX.

Every occupant enjoys plenty of room and benefits from very comfortable seats, making long trips even more pleasant. The driver-oriented cockpit further improves life behind the wheel of the MDX.

Sophisticated powertrain
While this crossover is no race car, performance is still commendable. The 300-hp, DOHC, VTEC V6 engine delivers V8-like accelerations. Plus, thanks to Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), stability and agility are impressive. By optimizing torque distribution, even in sharp corners, this system allows you to accelerate without having to worry too much about losing control. Electronic nannies like Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and Traction Control also provide confidence-inspiring assistance.

The automatic transmission offers five forward gears only--instead of six like a number of competitors. However, it includes a Sequential SportShift mode and Grade Logic Control, allowing more dynamic shifting with or without the intervention of the driver.

I found the steering a tad disappointing and artificial, with little feedback from the road. On the plus side, road-holding capacity is good despite the vehicle's size and 20.9-cm ground clearance. The MDX actually surprised me with its nimbleness through corners and maneuverability in city traffic.
