I just wish the electronic throttle wouldn't wait a half-second before acknowledging my wish to accelerate from a standstill. It happens pretty quickly: you'll press on the gas a bit and sense nothing's happening, so you then mash the gas pedal; The A6's computer brain wakes up and provides you with a full-throttle blastoff from a street corner. I learned to be more patient over time, but I was the one who had to adapt to the car's behaviour.

0-to-100 km/h accelerations take 7.8 seconds, which is just fine for the vocation of the car.

Packing up and going back home

As my kids were opening more and more presents on Christmas morning, I started to feel an ulcer coming along. I had to fit everything in the car, because if I left toys behind, I'd get an earful from the children once they'd realize not all their presents are accounted for.

The morning we left my mom's place, I backed up the car next to the door and starting packing the back of the A6. It felt like playing Tetris but it was much less fun. The long rear overhang of the Avant results in a long load floor in back, but the sloping rear backlight butts in on cargo space.

To my amazement, I got back home with every present, including a radio-controlled Hummer in a 2-by-1.5-foot box for my son and a doll care center in a 2-by-3-foot box for my daughter.

The A6's instrument panel is straightforward and easy to read, and the cockpit is made up with the finest materials; no surprise here for Audi owners. The multi-adjustable seats are supportive and comfortable. The second front cupholder is underneath the centre armrest, so you somehow have to find another location for your elbow when it's in use. Otherwise, the car's ergonomics are excellent.

However, the gizmos once again got the best of me. Having to adjust heating and ventilation settings in more than one step is irritating. Every time I'd mute the volume of the radio, the sound level would go back up every time I restarted the car. After two weeks, me and the MMI interface learned to respect each other, but we still haven't become friends.

The A6's instrument panel is straightforward and easy to read.
