Honda Canada has just sent us details and pictures of their 8th-generation Accord Coupe and Sedan, totally redesigned from the ground up.

The Coupe will be available in three trim levels: EX, EX-L and EX-L V6. The Sedan will offer five trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, EX V6 and EX-L V6.

Power comes from a choice of two engines: a 2.4-liter inline-4 that develops 190 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque (177 hp and 161 lb-ft in the base LX), and a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. That's 24 more horses in both engines than in the outgoing 2007 model, and the V6 gets a 37 lb-ft increase over the previous 3.0-liter engine.

In addition, the V6 gets Honda's Advanced Cylinder Management (VCM) system, which can run on three, four or all six cylinders, depending on driving conditions. VCM is only available if paired with the 5-speed automatic transmission; as a 6-speed manual is available in the Accord EX-L V6 Coupe.

Sadly, as power goes up, fuel economy goes down. The 4-cylinder with the manual gearbox now consumes a few tenths of a liter more in city driving (9.4 vs. 9.1), but highway mileage remains at 6.4. With the automatic, figures rise by a couple of tenths in both the city and the highway: 9.9 and 6.5, respectively, compared to last year's 9.7/6.3. As for the V6, fuel economy worsens with the 6-speed, but is improved with the automatic, thanks to the VCM: 11.0/6.9 city/highway, compared to the old 3.0-liter's 11.5/7.5 figures.

Both the Accord Coupe and Sedan variants are obviously larger in every dimension than their predecessors. Compared to the Sedan, the Coupe is a little shorter in length and height, but share the same width. Inside, the cars are wider, and Honda claims an increase of 95 litres in interior volume, and the new cars feature more rear kneeroom. The bigger and better-equipped cars get a 5% increase in weight, while torsional rigidity is improved by 20%.

On the outside, the Accord gets all-new sheetmetal, and the two-door version benefits from different body panels than the four-door, for a sportier look.
