And, joy of joys, the Honda Element SC can now count on a true centre console, complete with cup holder and storage space, something that was missing in the earlier versions, even though they sported cargo nets all over the passenger compartment.
Last but not least, the seat belt is now attached directly to the front passenger seat instead of the ceiling and door, as was previously the case.
It's important to remember that the Element has what's known as "suicide doors" (rear-hinged doors), which forces drivers to open their door to allow passengers to get out.
Finally, one cannot discuss the Element, SC or otherwise, without mentioning the incredible versatility of its interior layout. The four seats can be arranged in over 60 different configurations, including an actual bed that can accommodate two people for whom, let's face it, practicality comes before comfort.
On the Road
With its 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder, 166-horsepower engine, this little crossover can't be called a heart-stopper, although during serious acceleration, the steering wheel betrays a rather unpleasant torque effect.
However, the lowered suspension, a little too stiff for everyone's taste, ensures a more inspired driving experience than the original. Combined with the manual transmission, it even allows one to easily navigate city streets. Nevertheless, the Element will quickly run out of steam on the highway; you can't push it too hard without seriously compromising fuel efficiency.
With its long list of accessories (including a powerful audio system), trendy look, and snappy city driving capabilities, the Honda Element has taken a serious gulp from the Fountain of Youth. Enough to appeal to its true original target market? That remains to be seen, as the SC's starting price still falls somewhere between $29,999 and $31,900, making it a little expensive for such an unorthodox four-passenger vehicle.
