Accommodating?
There's enough space up front for both the driver and passenger, except that headroom is a tad limited. The B-pillars are another small issue as they impede three-quarter visibility, thereby increasing blind spots. On the plus side, the trunk is big and easy to access thanks to a low threshold and wide opening. The seats are equally satisfying; I found them to be comfortable, easy to adjust and remarkably supportive.

The 212-horsepower V6, in particular, is a decent performer.

As soon as you sit on board, you immediately notice the car's sporty DNA and driving position. The suspension is just as sporty, allowing an aggressive albeit firm ride.

Grandpa has some nerve!
In terms of performance, fun is always a quick dip of the throttle away. The Mazda6 has the heart to back up its sporty looks. In fact, the two engines available both work to deliver a spirited driving experience. The 212-horsepower V6, in particular, is a decent performer.

The transmission is direct and surgically precise. However, in order to enjoy that much fun, buyers have to pay the price, both at the dealership and at the pump. Fuel consumption is relatively higher than the competition's.

Living up to Mazda's Zoom-Zoom philosophy, the 6 is a true driver's car. The steering is precise and beyond reproach, allowing you to maintain a perfect line through twists and turns.

The old and beautiful
The Mazda6 is a car that aged well. Sure, it has some little flaws, but they're easily overshadowed by the many qualities. And if you think the interior design is too outdated, well, just wait a couple more months until the next-generation model comes in.

The engine might seem underpowered when compared to rivals, but the 6 is smaller than most so performance is still very sharp in typical Mazda fashion. Even after six full years on the market, I still appreciate this midsize sedan which used to serve as a benchmark for a quite a long time. Its sporty personality is totally unique, while its versatility makes it a sound choice. This is the last stop for the current Mazda6 and buyers should savor it like a fine wine. That said, I'm very much looking forward to the next vintage.

The Mazda6 is a car that aged well.
