A leap in the right direction
All-around visibility is good, but Bertrand and I agree that control ergonomics should be revised. For instance, the HVAC buttons are too close to the shifter in Park position. Also, the wiper/headlight stalks require some getting used to.

The layout is somewhat grim but well built nonetheless.

A talented tourer
Though not inspiring, the 138-hp Ecotec engine and 4-speed autobox allow decent accelerations: 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and 80 to 120 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Bertrand and I disagree on the quality of this transmission. I personally find it slow to react; since the calibration favors fuel efficiency over performance, you really have to push the car to enjoy some shifting quickness. Having also tested a manual-equipped model, I unhesitatingly preferred this 5-speed unit.

The 1.8L 4-cylinder is a good fit for the Astra. We both liked the precise steering as it improves driving dynamics. Handling is commendable and, despite noticeable body roll due to the smooth suspension, the car is both agile and comfortable on the road.

Of course, the standard 16-inch wheels play a huge role, helping the Astra stick to the road in corners and behave predictably, according to Bertrand. As for the brakes, the pedal seemed spongy at first and then progressively firm. It took me 43 meters to stop from 100 to 0 km/h with the 5-door Astra. In the snow, despite the lack of winter tires, the stability and traction control systems delivered the goods without being too intrusive.

Expectations are met
The 2008 Saturn Astra XE is well thought-out and nicely equipped which, as mentioned earlier, pushes the starting price slightly above the segment's average. If GM wanted to offer a compact car with a premium feel, they can say "Mission accomplished". Good road manners and ride comfort further help set this European apart. Note that a sportier 3-door model is also available.
