These extreme components are backed by a plethora of everyday amenities usually found in traditional tourers: split-folding rear seats, satellite radio, premium MP3 stereo, Hill Start Assist, keyless entry, etc. Also, the interior layout is much more akin to that of a regular car; only the performance controls and heavily bolstered seats clue you in on the sporty character of this Subaru.
A more civilized ride
The STI is still the most fearsome of all Subarus: powerful, nimble, a bit whimsical at times and, above all, not always friendly and forgiving in day-to-day action. The new generation follows the same basic recipe while offering a few extra ponies and, most importantly, improved comfort.
Admittedly, the 2008 STI is not as extreme as it used to be. Even on an overwhelming track like Laguna Seca, in optimum conditions, accelerations prove solid yet less gut-wrenching. Turbo lag is a thing of the past and, consequently, the power delivery is much more instantaneous and linear.
While the new STI is therefore not as spectacular in long straightaways, handling in corners and sprints on the fly are breathtaking. Torque is readily accessible and allows the driver to get the most out of the car, even after a significant deceleration, like the one required by Laguna Seca's Corkscrew. In more rally-type driving conditions, the firm yet comfortable suspension (as a co-driver, I barely suffered while giving instructions to my colleague) and the ultra-powerful brakes allow you to maintain a perfect line at all times. The precise steering obviously helps a lot.
In the end, the only real downside of the new STI might be its quieter attitude. True, the car is more powerful; the steering, more refined; and the torque management system, even more sophisticated. However, in my opinion, the STI has lost its wild spirit. Brutality has been replaced by technology.
For some, this will be a welcomed change. Others may see a beast that is no longer untameable. One thing's for sure, though: the Subaru WRX STI will continue to thrill enthusiasts everywhere.
