Audi's gadget-rich A4 Avant looks great, eats winter driving for lunch
Snowstorm-busting hardware
You'll also quickly get to know what makes a Quattro-equipped Audi such a weapon in the snow. From this year's larger, brighter and more high-tech looking cabin, owners can take a perch on their heated memory seat and grin smugly as all four wheels set off tearing Mother Nature's worst conditions to bits. The tester wore a fantastic set of winter rubber, giving the Quattro system plenty of traction to work with.

The tester was priced at $53,450, including both the navigation and technology packages.

During heavy snow and on icy roads, the stability control and steering systems impressed the most. The Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) jumps all over even small slides before they become issues, and the heavy, direct steering makes the car feel anchored to the road as opposed to simply gliding over top of it.

I don't recall another car that felt quite so confident and planted driving in nasty winter conditions. It even starts reliably at 37 below without the block heater plugged in.

High quality throughout, but read the manual
Entering and exiting the cabin pose no issues, and as expected, fit and finish are very good. Even in the frigid temperatures where most cars creak, crack and rattle, A4 feels solid and tight.

Storage levels are adequate and the front quarters are a just-right size for most drivers, though taller ones will wish for a touch more headroom. Most of the controls become intuitive before long though some may require a date with the owner's manual before navigating the MMI system like a pro.

The standard dual-pane panoramic sunroof is a nice touch on sunny days, as is the motorized shade that covers it if your eyes have had enough sun on the slopes or trails.
