The Quad Cab configuration is accompanied with the flexibility to choose between an 8-foot box or a shorter 6-foot-4-inch version. The much more spacious Crew Cab is limited to a 5-foot-7-inch box in order to keep the total vehicle length to a garage-friendly 5,817 mm (229 inches).

It absorbs bumps and pavement deterioration without transmitting rear-wheel jar.

35 new features
The new Ram includes 35 new features, never before found on this popular pickup. Rather than detail each, allow me to hit a few standouts.

Available with the Crew Cab box is a storage system referred to by Dodge as, 'RAM Box.' This feature embeds a large, waterproof, lockable storage area into either side of the cargo box. It essentially takes wasted space and puts it to good use securing valuables, tools and the like out of sight.

The RAM box system also includes a box divider, which is a fence system that can be placed in eleven different positions to restrict the movement of cargo. It can also be used to extend the length of the bed.

Another "first" in the pickup truck segment, and one sure to please hot, sweaty workers, are cooled front seats. Chilled air is fed through the perforated leather seats cushions and seatbacks. Combine this function with the vehicle's strong air conditioning unit, and the Ram becomes an instant igloo.

Another "pickup first" is a rear multi-link coil suspension arrangement combined with a solid axle. This unique setup significantly improves ride and handling characteristics without compromising load-carrying ability.

In fact, Mike Cairns, Chief Engineer for the Ram described how this technology is actually more effective at managing a heavy load than a traditional leaf spring arrangement. The coil setup reduces the propensity for the rear of the truck to step out of line when encountering road decay while cornering.

The drive
The mountainous topography of California proved to be the ideal test site for putting the new Ram through a day of rigorous testing. All the vehicles driven during this exercise were Hemi-powered units, which dealt effortlessly with hills and highway passing.
