There's one for everyone
Payload capacity is about mid-pack when limited to 4x4 crew cab versions. Some neat features help access the cargo box, such as the fold-down tailgate step and grab handle as well as the retractable side steps, although in our opinion, the latter isn't a must-have option.

Properly-equipped, the Ford can haul up to 5,126 kg or 11,300 lbs.

Mated to a 6-speed automatic, the engine delivers unremarkable fuel economy. We're averaging 18.5 L/100 km, but this week has been a very rough one, with two snowstorms, freezing rain and extreme cold temperatures. We spent hours stuck in traffic, but we're glad to report that the F-150's four-wheel drive system is quite capable on slippery roads.

Smooth ride
Spending so much time behind the wheel, we're impressed by the Ford's ride, which is devoid of the jitteriness that used to plague pickup trucks. Actually, the previous F-150 was excellent in that regard, too.

In general, the Ford is easy to drive for such a big vehicle, and you have a commanding view of the road ahead, which is one of the reasons why North Americans buy so many trucks. We just wish the SuperCrew would be easier to park, as this particular model has a rather wide 14.3-meter turning circle diameter.

Luxo cabin
The retirement of the Lincoln Mark LT won't make anyone cry, as the F-150 boasts attractive and upscale interiors, at least in its most uplevel trims. The Lariat has convincing woodgrain trim that looks better than what Dodge has done in the new Ram. There is a vast array of small buttons, but they're well laid out and easy to use.

Our test truck is also equipped with Microsoft's excellent SYNC multimedia system, which connects all of our cell phones in a matter of seconds.

The rear-seat accommodations are top-rate, except that the bench's cushion is too low.
