You also already know about the turbocharged Saturn Sky Redline and Pontiac Solstice GXP. These relative newcomers deliver 93 more horsepower in the same $40,000 ballpark as the loaded MX-5 tester.
Most will find the MX-5 feels a bit more solid, spacious and accommodating-- though certainly not as quick. Get next to one of the aforementioned models at a light, and its owner will probably demonstrate the performance difference for you without hesitation.
Ultimately, the MX-5 isn’t the most powerful or aggressive machine for the money, but it’s got nothing to prove, either. The simple recipe has been slightly sweetened, and it’s bound to keep loyal owners hooked while making the MX-5 even more attractive to new roadster shoppers. This one’s going down in the books.
