An interesting offering
Comprehensive standard equipment
Pontiac knows how to play the full-size sedan game. Not many compromises were made in terms of standard features. A quick look at the spec sheet is enough to realize that this American sedan has nothing to be ashamed of when compared to foreign rivals. In fact, it might even offer higher value if you take the MSRP into account. The comprehensive instrumentation is backed by an intelligent driver information center that I found quite handy and easy to use.

Not many compromises were made in terms of standard features.

Pontiac also cooked up two or three interesting option packages at reasonable prices in order to meet customer expectations. Both my testers came with the Comfort Package (dual-zone climate control and premium audio) and Premium Package (heated leather seats). The GT model also featured the Sport Package (19-inch alloy wheels with high-performance summer tires).

Independent suspension
The G8 sits on a fully-independent suspension, which means it does a better job of soaking up the dreaded bumps and potholes while managing engine thrusts more effectively. And to think people used to say it was too costly and too complicated! Dual stabilizer bars are even incorporated to improve rear axle control. It took the Australian wizards with their wild dirt roads to concoct such an effective suspension system.

Two models, two different philosophies
I got the opportunity to drive two of the three G8 models that will be available in Canada. The ultra-sporty GXP (with 6-speed manual or automatic transmission) won't hit the market until February 2009. The base and GT models have already arrived at Pontiac dealers.

Whether a V6 or V8 lies under the hood, the new G8 boasts a roomy interior for both the front and rear passengers. These two models also offer similar options, not to mention comparable fit and finish. The powertrain and underpinnings are what sets them apart. The GT is sport-oriented while the base model will get you around comfortably. I took the time to assess their respective performance. Here's how it goes:

In base trim, the G8 offers a surprizing 256 horsepower.
