Competition
The 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5X Limited has a base price of $32,395. Let's look at some competitors with a similar level of features:
Dodge Journey R/T AWD with sunroof, 235 hp, $30,995
Ford Escape XLT V6 AWD with options, 200 hp, $31,534
Honda CR-V EX-L, 166 hp, $35,190
Hyundai Tucson Limited AWD, 173 hp, $30,995
Jeep Compass Limited AWD with options, 172 hp, $28,195
Mazda Tribute GT-V6, 200 hp, $32,150
Nissan Rogue SL AWD with options, 170 hp, $34,198
Saturn Vue XE AWD with options, 222 hp, $35,425
Toyota RAV4 Limited with B package, 166 hp, $33,065
Volkswagen Tiguan Comfortline 4MOTION, 200 hp, $33,975
The Forester isn't a bargain, but it falls mid-pack in this group of well-equipped SUVs and crossovers.
Conclusion
I'm pretty sure Subaru will increase the Forester's market share with this new model, as it retains its versatility while looking much better. This SUV is easy to drive and feels solid like a bank vault. In the realm of 4-cylinder 'urban' sport-utilities and crossovers, the Forester isn't the most spacious or quickest, but it compensates with other qualities.
Personally, I'd go for the $25,795, base 2.5X model, as it includes all the essential comfort and convenience features I'd need to be happy. Xenon headlights, leather seats and a climate control system are small sacrifices for a lower monthly payment.
